OVERVIEW

If the cornea is cloudy or scarred from an eye injury or disease, vision becomes blurred. Scar tissue and other disorders /eye diseases can block light rays and prevent normal vision. The effect has been described by many patients as somewhat like looking through rippled glass or only see light started seeing again with corneal grafting.

The clouded cornea /diseased cornea  can be removed and replaced by clear, healthy tissue from a generous eye donor. A person may obtain a corneal transplant through the request of a qualified Cornea Transplant eye surgeon (Ophthalmologist).

What is a Corneal Transplant or grafting?

First, the cloudy tissue is removed with a special cutting instrument called a trephine or with laser. The other set of corneal trephine is used to cut out the donor cornea . Then, the clear donor cornea is sutured to recepient site.

What are the indication of corneal grafting?

The most frequent indications  :

1. Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy- which is a corneal decompensation that occasionally follows cataract surgery. 2. Corneal ulceration. 3. Corneal scars.4. Keratoconus /Corneal thinning.5. Herpes simplex and Varicella zoster viral infections or fungal infection leading to scarring.6. Fuchís endothelial dystrophy.7. Congenital opacities of the cornea. 8. Chemical burns of the eye. 9.
